Johari Africa: Handmade with Purpose

Johari Africa, meaning “Jewels of Africa” in Swahili, is the social enterprise brand of Amani Women Center’s (AWC) Women’s Economic Empowerment Program. It connects sewing and artisan skills with opportunities to earn income, helping women turn their creativity into greater economic independence.
 

Our products are handcrafted by refugee women at Amani Sewing Academy in Clarkston, Georgia, women in our sewing program in Abutia, Ghana, and AWC artisans in Nairobi, Kenya. Every piece reflects the skill, care, and cultural heritage of its maker.

We give donated fabrics new life through upcycling and incorporate authentic African textiles, recycled paper, coconut shells, glass powder, wood, seeds, and beadwork into our collections. These materials inspire distinctive designs that celebrate African artistry and encourage the thoughtful use of resources.

At AWC, skills training is part of a broader commitment to women’s well-being and long-term self-sufficiency. Through Johari Africa, we connect training with product creation and sales, helping women build confidence, develop their businesses, and support their families.
